Caulking with Backer Rod

What happens here

Load a tube of caulk, such as Tower Tech II, into a caulk gun. Cut the tip of the caulk tube at a 45-degree angle, making an opening just large enough to fill the gap you intend to seal. Prepare a sponge by dampening it with water and applying a small amount of caulk to its surface; this 'wet tooling' technique helps create a smoother finish.

Goal: Get the caulk and tools ready for application.

Tools and materials

  • Bucket — Holding water for the sponge
  • Caulk Gun — Dispensing caulk
  • Sponge — Smoothing the caulk bead and cleaning up excess
  • Utility Knife — Cutting the tip of the caulk tube
  • Caulk Tower Tech II — Sealing the gaps
  • Water Tap water — Dampening the sponge for tooling
